An Anheuser-Busch InBev-backed cold-chain supplier that delivers same-day craft beer to London accounts has added a kombucha to its menu.

Beer Hawk Fresh will distribute Fix8 Kombucha, a London-based brand of raw and refrigerated kombucha. The kombucha will be delivered chilled in both bottle and keg.

Fix8 joins Beer Hawk Fresh's portfolio of craft beers including San Diego's Modern Times and the A-B InBev-owned Goose Island, Camden Town and Birra del Borgo. Also on the list are Japanese brewer Kirin's Australian brewery, Little Creatures, as well as Kirin's London-based Fourpure and Huddersfield's Magic Rock. Beer Hawk Fresh is operated by Beer Hawk, the UK online beer shop bought by A-B InBev's start-up programme ZX Ventures in 2016.

Andrew Morgan, head of Beer Hawk Fresh, said: "The Fix8 range complements the expanding choice of brewery-fresh beers we distribute, and further demonstrates the benefits of our partnership approach to working with craft drinks producers."

Kombucha is growing in popularity in the US and UK, but raw kombucha, which is fermented with live bacteria, is difficult to distribute because it continues to ferment in the bottle. The kombucha has to be kept chilled to remain stable.

"Freshly-fermented kombucha must be stored chilled, otherwise it is overly-filtered and void of bacteria and yeast - essentially it becomes a 'dead' kombucha," said Freya Twigden, founder of Fix8. "It has been a challenge to find cold-chain distribution for the on-trade in particular, as most wholesalers only offer ambient distribution."

Twigden said kombucha offers beer drinkers a non-alcoholic alternative. "Kombucha is a great craft non-alcoholic ferment, that retains complexity and flavour when you're having a night off, so we think our partnership with Beer Hawk Fresh has strong potential to develop," she explained.
